Wall Stabilisation
Repointing
Maystone Structural will sympathetically re-point a masonry structure using either cementitious or Lime based Mortar dependent on the buildings original construction.
Pointing is the term given to the ‘finish’ of the material between the brick or stone used in the construction of a building. Depending on the age of the building, the mortar used to lay the stone or brick will either be lime or cement based. Incorrect pointing causes irreparable damage to the facade so it is essential to understand the substrate and what the mortar joints actually do for the fabric of the building.
The function of the mortar in the wall is to bed the the masonry together. The pointing must prevent water penetration through the joints, it must allow the wall to breathe and drain and it must be flexible enough to allow for natural movement and expansion of the building.
Pointing should be considered as a sacrificial element of the wall, and viewed as a maintenance item in need of replacement. The condition of walls cannot be viewed in isolation and repointing of any walls will not cure water ingress problems caused by other building failures, such as gutters, roofs, and leadwork. These must be in good condition to maintain the structural integrity of the facade.
Maystone Structural will asses the building’s age and original construction material to determine an appropriate mortar to be used in the repointing repair. Our Stone Mason’s are experts in the use of Cementitious and Lime based mortars. We mix to different strengths on site or use one of our suppliers to provide a premixed mortar ensuring a sympathetic and structurally sound repair.
